Objtool changes for v6.15:

the build on objtool warnings: CONFIG_OBJTOOL_WERROR.
While there are no currently known unfixed false positives
left, such an expansion in the severity of objtool warnings

- Add mechanism to count and report internal events. This significantly improves visibility on subtle corner conditions. - The default idle CPU selection logic is revamped and improved in multiple ways including being made topology aware. - sched_ext was disabling ttwu_queue for simplicity, which can be costly when hardware topology is more complex. - Allow retrieving exit information after a process has been reaped
through pidfds via the new PIDFD_INTO_EXIT extension for the
PIDFD_GET_INFO ioctl. Various tools need access to information about
a process/task even after it has already been reaped.
Pidfd polling allows waiting on either task exit or for a task to
have been reaped. The contract for PIDFD_INFO_EXIT is simply that
EPOLLHUP must be observed before exit information can be retrieved,
i.e., exit information is only provided once the task has been reaped
and then can be retrieved as long as the pidfd is open.
- Add PIDFD_SELF_{THREAD,THREAD_GROUP} sentinels allowing userspace to
forgo allocating a file descriptor for their own process. This is
useful in scenarios where users want to act on their own process
through pidfds and is akin to AT_FDCWD.
- Improve premature thread-group leader and subthread exec behavior
when polling on pidfds:
(1) During a multi-threaded exec by a subthread, i.e.,
non-thread-group leader thread, all other threads in the
thread-group including the thread-group leader are killed and the
struct pid of the thread-group leader will be taken over by the
subthread that called exec. IOW, two tasks change their TIDs.
(2) A premature thread-group leader exit means that the thread-group
leader exited before all of the other subthreads in the
thread-group have exited.
Both cases lead to inconsistencies for pidfd polling with
PIDFD_THREAD. Any caller that holds a PIDFD_THREAD pidfd to the
current thread-group leader may or may not see an exit notification
on the file descriptor depending on when poll is performed. If the
poll is performed before the exec of the subthread has concluded an
exit notification is generated for the old thread-group leader. If
the poll is performed after the exec of the subthread has concluded
no exit notification is generated for the old thread-group leader.
The correct behavior is to simply not generate an exit notification
on the struct pid of a subhthread exec because the struct pid is
taken over by the subthread and thus remains alive.
But this is difficult to handle because a thread-group may exit
premature as mentioned in (2). In that case an exit notification is
reliably generated but the subthreads may continue to run for an
indeterminate amount of time and thus also may exec at some point.
After this pull no exit notifications will be generated for a
PIDFD_THREAD pidfd for a thread-group leader until all subthreads
have been reaped. If a subthread should exec before no exit
notification will be generated until that task exits or it creates
subthreads and repeates the cycle.
This means an exit notification indicates the ability for the father
to reap the child.

The day has come where we finally provide a new api to listen for
mount topology changes outside of /proc/<pid>/mountinfo. A mount
namespace file descriptor can be supplied and registered with
fanotify to listen for mount topology changes.
Currently notifications for mount, umount and moving mounts are
generated. The generated notification record contains the unique
mount id of the mount.
The listmount() and statmount() api can be used to query detailed
information about the mount using the received unique mount id.
This allows userspace to figure out exactly how the mount topology
changed without having to generating diffs of /proc/<pid>/mountinfo
in userspace.
- Support O_PATH file descriptors with FSCONFIG_SET_FD in the new mount
api
- Support detached mounts in overlayfs
Since last cycle we support specifying overlayfs layers via file
descriptors. However, we don't allow detached mounts which means
userspace cannot user file descriptors received via
open_tree(OPEN_TREE_CLONE) and fsmount() directly. They have to
attach them to a mount namespace via move_mount() first.
This is cumbersome and means they have to undo mounts via umount().
Allow them to directly use detached mounts.
- Allow to retrieve idmappings with statmount
Currently it isn't possible to figure out what idmapping has been
attached to an idmapped mount. Add an extension to statmount() which
allows to read the idmapping from the mount.
- Allow creating idmapped mounts from mounts that are already idmapped
So far it isn't possible to allow the creation of idmapped mounts
from already idmapped mounts as this has significant lifetime
implications. Make the creation of idmapped mounts atomic by allow to
pass struct mount_attr together with the open_tree_attr() system call
allowing to solve these issues without complicating VFS lookup in any
way.
The system call has in general the benefit that creating a detached
mount and applying mount attributes to it becomes an atomic operation
for userspace.
- Add a way to query statmount() for supported options
Allow userspace to query which mount information can be retrieved
through statmount().

tracing: Disable branch profiling in noinstr code
CONFIG_TRACE_BRANCH_PROFILING inserts a call to ftrace_likely_update() for each use of likely() or unlikely(). That breaks noinstr rules if the affected function is annotated as noinstr. Disable branch profiling for files with noinstr functions. In addition to some individual files, this also includes the entire arch/x86 subtree, as well as the kernel/entry, drivers/cpuidle, and drivers/idle directories, all of which are noinstr-heavy. Due to the nature of how sched binaries are built by combining multiple .c files into one, branch profiling is disabled more broadly across the sched code than would otherwise be needed. Inline cgroup_rstat_flush_locked() into cgroup_rstat_flush() and move the lock/unlock calls to the beginning and ending of the loop body to make the critical section obvious. cgroup_rstat_flush_hold/release() do not make much sense with the lock being dropped and reacquired internally. Since it has no external callers, remove it and explicitly acquire the lock in cgroup_base_stat_cputime_show() instead. This leaves the code with a single flushing function, cgroup_rstat_flush(). pidfs: improve multi-threaded exec and premature thread-group leader exit polling
This is another attempt trying to make pidfd polling for multi-threaded
exec and premature thread-group leader exit consistent.
A quick recap of these two cases:
(1) During a multi-threaded exec by a subthread, i.e., non-thread-group
leader thread, all other threads in the thread-group including the
thread-group leader are killed and the struct pid of the
thread-group leader will be taken over by the subthread that called
exec. IOW, two tasks change their TIDs.
(2) A premature thread-group leader exit means that the thread-group
leader exited before all of the other subthreads in the thread-group
have exited.
Both cases lead to inconsistencies for pidfd polling with PIDFD_THREAD.
Any caller that holds a PIDFD_THREAD pidfd to the current thread-group
leader may or may not see an exit notification on the file descriptor
depending on when poll is performed. If the poll is performed before the
exec of the subthread has concluded an exit notification is generated
for the old thread-group leader. If the poll is performed after the exec
of the subthread has concluded no exit notification is generated for the
old thread-group leader.
The correct behavior would be to simply not generate an exit
notification on the struct pid of a subhthread exec because the struct
pid is taken over by the subthread and thus remains alive.
But this is difficult to handle because a thread-group may exit
prematurely as mentioned in (2). In that case an exit notification is
reliably generated but the subthreads may continue to run for an
indeterminate amount of time and thus also may exec at some point.
So far there was no way to distinguish between (1) and (2) internally.
This tiny series tries to address this problem by discarding
PIDFD_THREAD notification on premature thread-group leader exit.
If that works correctly then no exit notifications are generated for a
PIDFD_THREAD pidfd for a thread-group leader until all subthreads have
been reaped. If a subthread should exec aftewards no exit notification
will be generated until that task exits or it creates subthreads and
repeates the cycle.

The scheduler has this special SCHED_WARN() facility that depends on CONFIG_SCHED_DEBUG. Since CONFIG_SCHED_DEBUG is getting removed, convert SCHED_WARN() to WARN_ON_ONCE(). Note that the warning output isn't 100% equivalent: #define SCHED_WARN_ON(x) WARN_ONCE(x, #x) Because SCHED_WARN_ON() would output the 'x' condition as well, while WARN_ONCE() will only show a backtrace. Hopefully these are rare enough to not really matter. If it does, we should probably introduce a new WARN_ON() variant that outputs the condition in stringified form, or improve WARN_ON() itself. cgroup/rstat: avoid disabling irqs for O(num_cpu)
cgroup_rstat_flush_locked() grabs the irq safe cgroup_rstat_lock while iterating all possible cpus. It only drops the lock if there is scheduler or spin lock contention. If neither, then interrupts can be disabled for a long time. On large machines this can disable interrupts for a long enough time to drop network packets. On 400+ CPU machines I've seen interrupt disabled for over 40 msec. Prevent rstat from disabling interrupts while processing all possible cpus. Instead drop and reacquire cgroup_rstat_lock for each cpu. This approach was previously discussed in https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/ZBz%2FV5a7%2F6PZeM7S@slm.duckdns.org/, though this was in the context of an non-irq rstat spin lock. Benchmark this change with: 1) a single stat_reader process with 400 threads, each reading a test memcg's memory.stat repeatedly for 10 seconds. 2) 400 memory hog processes running in the test memcg and repeatedly charging memory until oom killed. pidfs: ensure that PIDFS_INFO_EXIT is available
When we currently create a pidfd we check that the task hasn't been reaped right before we create the pidfd. But it is of course possible that by the time we return the pidfd to userspace the task has already been reaped since we don't check again after having created a dentry for it. This was fine until now because that race was meaningless. But now that we provide PIDFD_INFO_EXIT it is a problem because it is possible that the kernel returns a reaped pidfd and it depends on the race whether PIDFD_INFO_EXIT information is available. This depends on if the task gets reaped before or after a dentry has been attached to struct pid. Make this consistent and only returned pidfds for reaped tasks if PIDFD_INFO_EXIT information is available. This is done by performing another check whether the task has been reaped right after we attached a dentry to struct pid. Since pidfs_exit() is called before struct pid's task linkage is removed the case where the task got reaped but a dentry was already attached to struct pid and exit information was recorded and published can be handled correctly. In that case we do return a pidfd for a reaped task like we would've before. sched/deadline: Rebuild root domain accounting after every update
Rebuilding of root domains accounting information (total_bw) is
currently broken on some cases, e.g. suspend/resume on aarch64. Problem
is that the way we keep track of domain changes and try to add bandwidth
back is convoluted and fragile.
Fix it by simplify things by making sure bandwidth accounting is cleared
and completely restored after root domains changes (after root domains
are again stable).
To be sure we always call dl_rebuild_rd_accounting while holding
cpuset_mutex we also add cpuset_reset_sched_domains() wrapper.

sched/deadline: Generalize unique visiting of root domains
Bandwidth checks and updates that work on root domains currently employ
a cookie mechanism for efficiency. This mechanism is very much tied to
when root domains are first created and initialized.
Generalize the cookie mechanism so that it can be used also later at
runtime while updating root domains. Also, additionally guard it with
sched_domains_mutex, since domains need to be stable while updating them
(and it will be required for further dynamic changes).

sched: Add a generic function to return the preemption string
The individual architectures often add the preemption model to the begin
of the backtrace. This is the case on X86 or ARM64 for the "die" case
but not for regular warning. With the addition of DYNAMIC_PREEMPT for
PREEMPT_RT we end up with CONFIG_PREEMPT and CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT set
simultaneously. That means that everyone who tried to add that piece of
information gets it wrong for PREEMPT_RT because PREEMPT is checked
first.
Provide a generic function which returns the current scheduling model
considering LAZY preempt and the current state of PREEMPT_DYNAMIC.

To save/restore LBR call stack data in system-wide mode, the task_struct information is required. Extend the parameters of sched_task() to supply task_struct information. When schedule in, the LBR call stack data for new task will be restored. When schedule out, the LBR call stack data for old task will be saved. Only need to pass the required task_struct information. perf: attach/detach PMU specific data
The LBR call stack data has to be saved/restored during context switch to fix the shorter LBRs call stacks issue in the system-wide mode. Allocate PMU specific data and attach them to the corresponding task_struct during LBR call stack monitoring. When a LBR call stack event is accounted, the perf_ctx_data for the related tasks will be allocated/attached by attach_perf_ctx_data(). When a LBR call stack event is unaccounted, the perf_ctx_data for related tasks will be detached/freed by detach_perf_ctx_data(). The LBR call stack event could be a per-task event or a system-wide event. - For a per-task event, perf only allocates the perf_ctx_data for the current task. If the allocation fails, perf will error out. - For a system-wide event, perf has to allocate the perf_ctx_data for both the existing tasks and the upcoming tasks. The allocation for the existing tasks is done in perf_event_alloc(). If any allocation fails, perf will error out. The allocation for the new tasks will be done in perf_event_fork(). A global reader/writer semaphore, global_ctx_data_rwsem, is added to address the global race. - The perf_ctx_data only be freed by the last LBR call stack event. The number of the per-task events is tracked by refcount of each task. Since the system-wide events impact all tasks, it's not practical to go through the whole task list to update the refcount for each system-wide event. The number of system-wide events is tracked by a global variable global_ctx_data_ref. perf: Save PMU specific data in task_struct
Some PMU specific data has to be saved/restored during context switch,
e.g. LBR call stack data. Currently, the data is saved in event context
structure, but only for per-process event. For system-wide event,
because of missing the LBR call stack data after context switch, LBR
callstacks are always shorter in comparison to per-process mode.

It isn't practical to simply allocate the data for system-wide event in
CPU context structure for all tasks. We have no idea which CPU a task
will be scheduled to. The duplicated LBR data has to be maintained on
every CPU context structure. That's a huge waste. Otherwise, the LBR
data still lost if the task is scheduled to another CPU.
Save the pmu specific data in task_struct. The size of pmu specific data
is 788 bytes for LBR call stack. Usually, the overall amount of threads
doesn't exceed a few thousands. For 10K threads, keeping LBR data would
consume additional ~8MB. The additional space will only be allocated
during LBR call stack monitoring. It will be released when the
monitoring is finished.
Furthermore, moving task_ctx_data from perf_event_context to task_struct
can reduce complexity and make things clearer. E.g. perf doesn't need to
swap task_ctx_data on optimized context switch path.
This patch set is just the first step. There could be other
optimization/extension on top of this patch set. E.g. for cgroup
profiling, perf just needs to save/store the LBR call stack information
for tasks in specific cgroup. That could reduce the additional space.
Also, the LBR call stack can be available for software events, or allow
even debugging use cases, like LBRs on crash later.
Because of the alignment requirement of Intel Arch LBR, the Kmem cache
is used to allocate the PMU specific data. It's required when child task
allocates the space. Save it in struct perf_ctx_data.
The refcount in struct perf_ctx_data is used to track the users of pmu
specific data.

perf/ring_buffer: Allow the EPOLLRDNORM flag for poll
The poll man page says POLLRDNORM is equivalent to POLLIN. For poll(),
it seems that if user sets pollfd with POLLRDNORM in userspace, perf_poll
will not return until timeout even if perf_output_wakeup called,
whereas POLLIN returns.

perf/core: Use POLLHUP for pinned events in error
Pinned performance events can enter an error state when they fail to be scheduled in the context due to a failed constraint or some other conflict or condition. In error state these events won't generate any samples anymore and are silently ignored until they are recovered by PERF_EVENT_IOC_ENABLE, or the condition can also change so that they can be scheduled in. Tooling should be allowed to know about the state change, but currently there's no mechanism to notify tooling when events enter an error state. One way to do this is to issue a POLLHUP event to poll(2) to handle this. Reading events in an error state would return 0 (EOF) and it matches to the behavior of POLLHUP according to the man page. Tooling should remove the fd of the event from pollfd after getting POLLHUP, otherwise it'll be returned repeatedly. Tracing instances have a ref count to keep them around while files within their directories are open. This prevents them from being deleted while they are used. The histogram code had some files that needed to take the ref count and that was added, but the error paths did not decrement the ref counts.
