Riccardo Mancini 85a571cb9d perf probe-file: Delete namelist in del_events() on the error path
[ Upstream commit e0fa7ab422 ]

ASan reports some memory leaks when running:

  # perf test "42: BPF filter"

This second leak is caused by a strlist not being dellocated on error
inside probe_file__del_events.

This patch adds a goto label before the deallocation and makes the error
path jump to it.

Leo Yan f80aa52ef6 perf session: Correct buffer copying when peeking events
[ Upstream commit 197eecb6ec ]

When peeking an event, it has a short path and a long path. The short
path uses the session pointer "one_mmap_addr" to directly fetch the
event; and the long path needs to read out the event header and the
following event data from file and fill into the buffer pointer passed
through the argument "buf".

The issue is in the long path that it copies the event header and event
data into the same destination address which pointer "buf", this means
the event header is overwritten. We are just lucky to run into the
short path in most cases, so we don't hit the issue in the long path.

This patch adds the offset "hdr_sz" to the pointer "buf" when copying
the event data, so that it can reserve the event header which can be
used properly by its caller.

Adrian Hunter 55a16e40cd perf intel-pt: Fix transaction abort handling
commit cb7987837c upstream.

When adding support for power events, some handling of FUP packets was
unified. That resulted in breaking reporting of TSX aborts, by not
considering the associated TIP packet. Fix that.

Example:

A machine that supports TSX is required. It will have flag "rtm". Kernel
parameter tsx=on may be required.

 # for w in `cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -m1 flags `;do echo $w | grep rtm ; done
 rtm

Test program:

 #include <stdio.h>
 #include <immintrin.h>

 int main()
 {
        int x = 0;

        if (_xbegin() == _XBEGIN_STARTED) {
                x = 1;
                _xabort(1);
        } else {
                printf("x = %d\n", x);
        }
        return 0;
 }

Adrian Hunter bc586be0ef perf intel-pt: Fix sample instruction bytes
commit c954eb72b3 upstream.

The decoder reports the current instruction if it was decoded. In some
cases the current instruction is not decoded, in which case the instruction
bytes length must be set to zero. Ensure that is always done.

Note perf script can anyway get the instruction bytes for any samples where
they are not present.

Also note, that there is a redundant "ptq->insn_len = 0" statement which is
not removed until a subsequent patch in order to make this patch apply
cleanly to stable branches.

Example:

Adrian Hunter be4153fe56 perf auxtrace: Fix auxtrace queue conflict
[ Upstream commit b410ed2a85 ]

The only requirement of an auxtrace queue is that the buffers are in
time order. That is achieved by making separate queues for separate
perf buffer or AUX area buffer mmaps.

That generally means a separate queue per cpu for per-cpu contexts, and
a separate queue per thread for per-task contexts.

When buffers are added to a queue, perf checks that the buffer cpu and
thread id (tid) match the queue cpu and thread id.

However, generally, that need not be true, and perf will queue buffers
correctly anyway, so the check is not needed.

In addition, the check gets erroneously hit when using sample mode to
trace multiple threads.

Consequently, fix that case by removing the check.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 78c9fad3fd perf tools: Fix DSO filtering when not finding a map for a sampled address
[ Upstream commit c69bf11ad3 ]

When we lookup an address and don't find a map we should filter that
sample if the user specified a list of --dso entries to filter on, fix
it.

Before:

  $ perf script
             sleep 274800  2843.556162:          1 cycles:u:  ffffffffbb26bff4 [unknown] ([unknown])
             sleep 274800  2843.556168:          1 cycles:u:  ffffffffbb2b047d [unknown] ([unknown])
             sleep 274800  2843.556171:          1 cycles:u:  ffffffffbb2706b2 [unknown] ([unknown])
             sleep 274800  2843.556174:          6 cycles:u:  ffffffffbb2b0267 [unknown] ([unknown])
             sleep 274800  2843.556176:         59 cycles:u:  ffffffffbb2b03b1 [unknown] ([unknown])
             sleep 274800  2843.556180:        691 cycles:u:  ffffffffbb26bff4 [unknown] ([unknown])
             sleep 274800  2843.556189:       9160 cycles:u:      7fa9550eeaa3 __GI___tunables_init+0xf3 (/usr/lib64/ld-2.32.so)
             sleep 274800  2843.556312:      86937 cycles:u:      7fa9550e157b _dl_lookup_symbol_x+0x4b (/usr/lib64/ld-2.32.so)
  $

So we have some samples we somehow didn't find in a map for, if we now
do:

  $ perf report --stdio --dso /usr/lib64/ld-2.32.so
  # dso: /usr/lib64/ld-2.32.so
  #
  # Total Lost Samples: 0
  #
  # Samples: 8  of event 'cycles:u'
  # Event count (approx.): 96856
  #
  # Overhead  Command  Symbol
  # ........  .......  ........................
  #
      89.76%  sleep    [.] _dl_lookup_symbol_x
       9.46%  sleep    [.] __GI___tunables_init
       0.71%  sleep    [k] 0xffffffffbb26bff4
       0.06%  sleep    [k] 0xffffffffbb2b03b1
       0.01%  sleep    [k] 0xffffffffbb2b0267
       0.00%  sleep    [k] 0xffffffffbb2706b2
       0.00%  sleep    [k] 0xffffffffbb2b047d
  $

After this patch we get the right output with just entries for the DSOs
specified in --dso:

  $ perf report --stdio --dso /usr/lib64/ld-2.32.so
  # dso: /usr/lib64/ld-2.32.so
  #
  # Total Lost Samples: 0

Jiri Olsa f9b29e6e03 perf python scripting: Fix printable strings in python3 scripts
commit 6fcd5ddc3b upstream.

Hagen reported broken strings in python3 tracepoint scripts:

  make PYTHON=python3

  perf script --gen-script py
  perf script -s ./perf-script.py

  [..]

The problem is in the is_printable_array function that does not take the
zero byte into account and claim such string as not printable, so the
code will create byte array instead of string.

Adrian Hunter 98f78dd3ca perf intel-pt: Fix "context_switch event has no tid" error
[ Upstream commit 7d537a8d2e ]

A context_switch event can have no tid because pids can be detached from
a task while the task is still running (in do_exit()). Note this won't
happen with per-task contexts because then tracing stops at
perf_event_exit_task()

If a task with no tid gets preempted, or a dying task gets preempted and
its parent releases it, when it subsequently gets switched back in,
Intel PT will not be able to determine what task is running and prints
an error "context_switch event has no tid". However, it is not really an
error because the task is in kernel space and the decoder can continue
to decode successfully. Fix by changing the error to be only a logged
message, and make allowance for tid == -1.

Example:

  Using 5.9-rc4 with Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop) e.g.
  $ uname -r
  5.9.0-rc4
  $ grep PREEMPT .config

In the absence of any modules, no "modules" map is created, but there
are other executable pages to map, due to eBPF JIT, kprobe or ftrace.
Map them by recognizing that the first "module" symbol is not
necessarily from a module, and adjust the map accordingly.

Masami Hiramatsu 61c4decf37 perf probe: Fix memory leakage when the probe point is not found
[ Upstream commit 12d572e785 ]

Fix the memory leakage in debuginfo__find_trace_events() when the probe
point is not found in the debuginfo. If there is no probe point found in
the debuginfo, debuginfo__find_probes() will NOT return -ENOENT, but 0.

Thus the caller of debuginfo__find_probes() must check the tf.ntevs and
release the allocated memory for the array of struct probe_trace_event.

The current code releases the memory only if the debuginfo__find_probes()
hits an error but not checks tf.ntevs. In the result, the memory allocated
on *tevs are not released if tf.ntevs == 0.

This fixes the memory leakage by checking tf.ntevs == 0 in addition to
ret < 0.

Masami Hiramatsu 23789fb848 perf probe: Fix to check blacklist address correctly
commit 80526491c2 upstream.

Fix to check kprobe blacklist address correctly with relocated address
by adjusting debuginfo address.

Since the address in the debuginfo is same as objdump, it is different
from relocated kernel address with KASLR. Thus, 'perf probe' always
misses to catch the blacklisted addresses.

Without this patch, 'perf probe' can not detect the blacklist addresses
on a KASLR enabled kernel.

  # perf probe kprobe_dispatcher

With this patch, it correctly shows the error message.

disconnect3d aefc7ec470 perf map: Fix off by one in strncpy() size argument
commit db2c549407 upstream.

This patch fixes an off-by-one error in strncpy size argument in
tools/perf/util/map.c. The issue is that in:

        strncmp(filename, "/system/lib/", 11)

the passed string literal: "/system/lib/" has 12 bytes (without the NULL
byte) and the passed size argument is 11. As a result, the logic won't
match the ending "/" byte and will pass filepaths that are stored in
other directories e.g. "/system/libmalicious/bin" or just
"/system/libmalicious".

This functionality seems to be present only on Android. I assume the
/system/ directory is only writable by the root user, so I don't think
this bug has much (or any) security impact.

Masami Hiramatsu 376bbcf271 perf probe: Fix wrong address verification
commit 07d3698578 upstream.

Since there are some DIE which has only ranges instead of the
combination of entrypc/highpc, address verification must use
dwarf_haspc() instead of dwarf_entrypc/dwarf_highpc.

Also, the ranges only DIE will have a partial code in different section
(e.g. unlikely code will be in text.unlikely as "FUNC.cold" symbol). In
that case, we can not use dwarf_entrypc() or die_entrypc(), because the
offset from original DIE can be a minus value.

Instead, this simply gets the symbol and offset from symtab.

Without this patch;

  # perf probe -D clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1
  Failed to get entry address of clear_tasks_mm_cpumask
    Error: Failed to add events.

And with this patch:

  # perf probe -D clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask clear_tasks_mm_cpumask+0
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_1 clear_tasks_mm_cpumask+5
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_2 clear_tasks_mm_cpumask+8
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_3 clear_tasks_mm_cpumask+16
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_4 clear_tasks_mm_cpumask+82

Committer testing:

I managed to reproduce the above:

  [root@quaco ~]# perf probe -D clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask _text+919968
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_1 _text+919973
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_2 _text+919976
  [root@quaco ~]#

But then when trying to actually put the probe in place, it fails if I
use :0 as the offset:

  [root@quaco ~]# perf probe -L clear_tasks_mm_cpumask | head -5
  <clear_tasks_mm_cpumask@/usr/src/debug/kernel-5.2.fc30/linux-5.2.18-200.fc30.x86_64/kernel/cpu.c:0>
        0  void clear_tasks_mm_cpumask(int cpu)
        1  {
        2  	struct task_struct *p;

  [root@quaco ~]# perf probe clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:0
  Probe point 'clear_tasks_mm_cpumask' not found.
    Error: Failed to add events.
  [root@quaco

The next patch is needed to fix this case.

Due to this inconsistency, the macro replaces its second argument with
"fmt" regardless of its original name.

So far it works because only "fmt" is passed to the second argument.
However, this behavior is not expected and should be fixed.

Masami Hiramatsu c2816fc40d perf probe: Fix to show function entry line as probe-able
commit 91e2f539ee upstream.

Fix die_walk_lines() to list the function entry line correctly. Since
the dwarf_entrypc() does not return the entry pc if the DIE has only
range attribute, __die_walk_funclines() fails to list the declaration
line (entry line) in that case.

To solve this issue, this introduces die_entrypc() which correctly
returns the entry PC (the first address range) even if the DIE has only
range attribute. With this fix die_walk_lines() shows the function entry
line is able to probe correctly.

Masami Hiramatsu 361b2a9cd8 perf probe: Filter out instances except for inlined subroutine and subprogram
[ Upstream commit da6cb952a8 ]

Filter out instances except for inlined_subroutine and subprogram DIE in
die_walk_instances() and die_is_func_instance().

This fixes an issue that perf probe sets some probes on calling address
instead of a target function itself.

When perf probe walks on instances of an abstruct origin (a kind of
function prototype of inlined function), die_walk_instances() can also
pass a GNU_call_site (a GNU extension for call site) to callback. Since
it is not an inlined instance of target function, we have to filter out
when searching a probe point.

Without this patch, perf probe sets probes on call site address too.This
can happen on some function which is marked "inlined", but has actual
symbol. (I'm not sure why GCC mark it "inlined"):

  # perf probe -D vfs_read
  p:probe/vfs_read _text+2500017
  p:probe/vfs_read_1 _text+2499468

Masami Hiramatsu c9560d9168 perf probe: Skip end-of-sequence and non statement lines
[ Upstream commit f4d99bdfd1 ]

Skip end-of-sequence and non-statement lines while walking through lines
list.

The "end-of-sequence" line information means:

 "the current address is that of the first byte after the
  end of a sequence of target machine instructions."
 (DWARF version 4 spec 6.2.2)

This actually means out of scope and we can not probe on it.

On the other hand, the statement lines (is_stmt) means:

 "the current instruction is a recommended breakpoint location.
  A recommended breakpoint location is intended to “represent”
  a line, a statement and/or a semantically distinct subpart
  of a statement."

 (DWARF version 4 spec 6.2.2)

So, non-statement line info also should be skipped.

These can reduce unneeded probe points and also avoid an error.

E.g. without this patch:

  # perf probe -a "clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1"
  Added new events:
    probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask (on clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1)
    probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_1 (on clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1)
    probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_2 (on clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1)
    probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_3 (on clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1)
    probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_4 (on clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1)

  You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:

  	perf record -e probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask_4 -aR sleep 1

  #

This puts 5 probes on one line, but acutally it's not inlined function.
This is because there are many non statement instructions at the
function prologue.

With this patch:

  # perf probe -a "clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1"
  Added new event:
    probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask (on clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:1)

  You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:

  	perf record -e probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask -aR sleep 1

  #

Now perf-probe skips unneeded addresses.

Masami Hiramatsu c00f4acafc perf probe: Fix to show calling lines of inlined functions
[ Upstream commit 86c0bf8539 ]

Fix to show calling lines of inlined functions (where an inline function
is called).

die_walk_lines() filtered out the lines inside inlined functions based
on the address. However this also filtered out the lines which call
those inlined functions from the target function.

To solve this issue, check the call_file and call_line attributes and do
not filter out if it matches to the line information.

Without this fix, perf probe -L doesn't show some lines correctly.
(don't see the lines after 17)

Masami Hiramatsu 8f664b2e9b perf probe: Skip overlapped location on searching variables
[ Upstream commit dee36a2abb ]

Since debuginfo__find_probes() callback function can be called with the
location which already passed, the callback function must filter out
such overlapped locations.

add_probe_trace_event() has already done it by commit 1a375ae765
("perf probe: Skip same probe address for a given line"), but
add_available_vars() doesn't. Thus perf probe -v shows same address
repeatedly as below:

  # perf probe -V vfs_read:18

          @<vfs_read+217>
                  char*   buf

Masami Hiramatsu d622edacac perf probe: Fix to probe a function which has no entry pc
[ Upstream commit 5d16dbcc31 ]

Fix 'perf probe' to probe a function which has no entry pc or low pc but
only has ranges attribute.

probe_point_search_cb() uses dwarf_entrypc() to get the probe address,
but that doesn't work for the function DIE which has only ranges
attribute. Use die_entrypc() instead.

Without this fix:

  # perf probe -k ../build-x86_64/vmlinux -D clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:0
  Probe point 'clear_tasks_mm_cpumask' not found.
    Error: Failed to add events.

With this:

  # perf probe -k ../build-x86_64/vmlinux -D clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:0
  p:probe/clear_tasks_mm_cpumask clear_tasks_mm_cpumask+0

Committer testing:

Before:

  [root@quaco ~]# perf probe clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:0
  Probe point 'clear_tasks_mm_cpumask' not found.
    Error: Failed to add events.
  [root@quaco ~]#

After:

  [root@quaco ~]# perf probe clear_tasks_mm_cpumask:0
  Added new event:
    probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask (on clear_tasks_mm_cpumask)

  You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:

  	perf record -e probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask -aR sleep 1

  [root@quaco ~]#

Using it with 'perf trace':

  [root@quaco ~]# perf trace -e probe:clear_tasks_mm_cpumask

Doesn't seem to be used in x86_64:

  $ find . -name "*.c" | xargs grep clear_tasks_mm_cpumask
  ./kernel/cpu.c: * clear_tasks_mm_cpumask - Safely clear tasks' mm_cpumask for a CPU
  ./kernel/cpu.c:void clear_tasks_mm_cpumask(int cpu)
  ./arch/xtensa/kernel/smp.c:	clear_tasks_mm_cpumask(cpu);
  ./arch/csky/kernel/smp.c:	clear_tasks_mm_cpumask(cpu);
  ./arch/sh/kernel/smp.c:	clear_tasks_mm_cpumask(cpu);
  ./arch/arm/kernel/smp.c:	clear_tasks_mm_cpumask(cpu);
  ./arch/powerpc/mm/nohash/mmu_context.c:	clear_tasks_mm_cpumask(cpu);
  $ find . -name "*.h" | xargs grep clear_tasks_mm_cpumask
  ./include/linux/cpu.h:void clear_tasks_mm_cpumask(int cpu);
  $ find . -name "*.S" | xargs grep clear_tasks_mm_cpumask

Masami Hiramatsu cebb762e56 perf probe: Fix to probe an inline function which has no entry pc
[ Upstream commit eb6933b29d ]

Fix perf probe to probe an inlne function which has no entry pc
or low pc but only has ranges attribute.

This seems very rare case, but I could find a few examples, as
same as probe_point_search_cb(), use die_entrypc() to get the
entry address in probe_point_inline_cb() too.

Without this patch:

  # perf probe -D __amd_put_nb_event_constraints
  Failed to get entry address of __amd_put_nb_event_constraints.
  Probe point '__amd_put_nb_event_constraints' not found.
    Error: Failed to add events.
