If you look at the frame #2, the code is:
488 if (he->srcline) {
489 he->srcline = strdup(he->srcline);
490 if (he->srcline == NULL)
491 goto err_rawdata;
492 }
If he->srcline is not NULL (it is not NULL if it is uninitialized rubbish),
it gets strdupped and strdupping a rubbish random string causes the problem.
Also, if you look at the commit 1fb7d06a50, it adds the srcline property
into the struct, but not initializing it everywhere needed.
Committer notes:
Now I see, when using --ignore-callees=do_idle we end up here at line
2189 in add_callchain_ip():
2181 if (al.sym != NULL) {
2182 if (perf_hpp_list.parent && !*parent &&
2183 symbol__match_regex(al.sym, &parent_regex))
2184 *parent = al.sym;
2185 else if (have_ignore_callees && root_al &&
2186 symbol__match_regex(al.sym, &ignore_callees_regex)) {
2187 /* Treat this symbol as the root,
2188 forgetting its callees. */
2189 *root_al = al;
2190 callchain_cursor_reset(cursor);
2191 }
2192 }
And the al that doesn't have the ->srcline field initialized will be
copied to the root_al, so then, back to:
1211 int hist_entry_iter__add(struct hist_entry_iter *iter, struct addr_location *al,
1212 int max_stack_depth, void *arg)
1213 {
1214 int err, err2;
1215 struct map *alm = NULL;
1216
1217 if (al)
1218 alm = map__get(al->map);
1219
1220 err = sample__resolve_callchain(iter->sample, &callchain_cursor, &iter->parent,
1221 iter->evsel, al, max_stack_depth);
1222 if (err) {
1223 map__put(alm);
1224 return err;
1225 }
1226
1227 err = iter->ops->prepare_entry(iter, al);
1228 if (err)
1229 goto out;
1230
1231 err = iter->ops->add_single_entry(iter, al);
1232 if (err)
1233 goto out;
1234
That al at line 1221 is what hist_entry_iter__add() (called from
sample__resolve_callchain()) saw as 'root_al', and then:
iter->ops->add_single_entry(iter, al);
will go on with al->srcline with a bogus value, I'll add the above
sequence to the cset and apply, thanks!

[ Upstream commit 197eecb6ec ]
When peeking an event, it has a short path and a long path. The short
path uses the session pointer "one_mmap_addr" to directly fetch the
event; and the long path needs to read out the event header and the
following event data from file and fill into the buffer pointer passed
through the argument "buf".
The issue is in the long path that it copies the event header and event
data into the same destination address which pointer "buf", this means
the event header is overwritten. We are just lucky to run into the
short path in most cases, so we don't hit the issue in the long path.
This patch adds the offset "hdr_sz" to the pointer "buf" when copying
the event data, so that it can reserve the event header which can be
used properly by its caller.

commit c954eb72b3 upstream.
The decoder reports the current instruction if it was decoded. In some
cases the current instruction is not decoded, in which case the instruction
bytes length must be set to zero. Ensure that is always done.
Note perf script can anyway get the instruction bytes for any samples where
they are not present.
Also note, that there is a redundant "ptq->insn_len = 0" statement which is
not removed until a subsequent patch in order to make this patch apply
cleanly to stable branches.
Example:
A machne that supports TSX is required. It will have flag "rtm". Kernel
parameter tsx=on may be required.
# for w in `cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -m1 flags `;do echo $w | grep rtm ; done
rtm
Test program:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <immintrin.h>
int main()
{
int x = 0;
if (_xbegin() == _XBEGIN_STARTED) {
x = 1;
_xabort(1);
} else {
printf("x = %d\n", x);
}
return 0;
}

[ Upstream commit b410ed2a85 ]
The only requirement of an auxtrace queue is that the buffers are in
time order. That is achieved by making separate queues for separate
perf buffer or AUX area buffer mmaps.
That generally means a separate queue per cpu for per-cpu contexts, and
a separate queue per thread for per-task contexts.
When buffers are added to a queue, perf checks that the buffer cpu and
thread id (tid) match the queue cpu and thread id.
However, generally, that need not be true, and perf will queue buffers
correctly anyway, so the check is not needed.
In addition, the check gets erroneously hit when using sample mode to
trace multiple threads.
Consequently, fix that case by removing the check.

commit 95c6fe970a upstream.
If packet processing wants to know the packet is bound with which ETM
version, it needs to access metadata to decide that based on metadata
magic number; but we cannot simply to use CPU logic ID number as index
to access metadata sequential array, especially when system have
hotplugged off CPUs, the metadata array are only allocated for online
CPUs but not offline CPUs, so the CPU logic number doesn't match with
its index in the array.
This patch is to change tuple from traceID-CPU# to traceID-metadata,
thus it can use the tuple to retrieve metadata pointer according to
traceID.
For safe accessing metadata fields, this patch provides helper function
cs_etm__get_cpu() which is used to return CPU number according to
traceID; cs_etm_decoder__buffer_packet() is the first consumer for this
helper function.

perf may fail to build in v4.19.y with the following error.
util/evsel.c: In function ‘perf_evsel__exit’:
util/util.h:25:28: error:
passing argument 1 of ‘free’ discards ‘const’ qualifier from pointer target type
This is observed (at least) with gcc v6.5.0. The underlying problem is
the following statement.
zfree(&evsel->pmu_name);
evsel->pmu_name is decared 'const *'. zfree in turn is defined as
#define zfree(ptr) ({ free(*ptr); *ptr = NULL; })
and thus passes the const * to free(). The problem is not seen
in the upstream kernel since zfree() has been rewritten there.
The problem has been introduced into v4.19.y with the backport of upstream
commit d4953f7ef1 (perf parse-events: Fix 3 use after frees found with
clang ASAN).
One possible fix of this problem would be to not declare pmu_name
as const. This patch chooses to typecast the parameter of zfree()
to void *, following the guidance from the upstream kernel which
does the same since commit 7f7c536f23 ("tools lib: Adopt
zalloc()/zfree() from tools/perf")

[ Upstream commit 8510895baf ]
A big uncore event group is split into multiple small groups which only
include the uncore events from the same PMU. This has been supported in
the commit 3cdc5c2cb9 ("perf parse-events: Handle uncore event
aliases in small groups properly").
If the event's PMU name starts to repeat, it must be a new event.
That can be used to distinguish the leader from other members.
But now it only compares the pointer of pmu_name
(leader->pmu_name == evsel->pmu_name).
If we use "perf stat -M LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE -a" on cascadelakex,
the event list is:
evsel->name evsel->pmu_name
---------------------------------------------------------------
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_4 (as leader)
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_2
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_0
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_5
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_3
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_1
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part1 uncore_iio_4
......
For the event "unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part1" with
"uncore_iio_4", it should be the event from PMU "uncore_iio_4".
It's not a new leader for this PMU.
But if we use "(leader->pmu_name == evsel->pmu_name)", the check
would be failed and the event is stored to leaders[] as a new
PMU leader.
So this patch uses strcmp to compare the PMU name between events.

[ Upstream commit 12d572e785 ]
Fix the memory leakage in debuginfo__find_trace_events() when the probe
point is not found in the debuginfo. If there is no probe point found in
the debuginfo, debuginfo__find_probes() will NOT return -ENOENT, but 0.
Thus the caller of debuginfo__find_probes() must check the tf.ntevs and
release the allocated memory for the array of struct probe_trace_event.
The current code releases the memory only if the debuginfo__find_probes()
hits an error but not checks tf.ntevs. In the result, the memory allocated
on *tevs are not released if tf.ntevs == 0.
This fixes the memory leakage by checking tf.ntevs == 0 in addition to
ret < 0.

commit 2ae5d0d7d8 upstream.
Since commit 03db8b583d ("perf tools: Fix
maps__find_symbol_by_name()") introduced map address range check in
maps__find_symbol_by_name(), we can not get "_etext" from kernel map
because _etext is placed on the edge of the kernel .text section (=
kernel map in perf.)
To fix this issue, this checks the address correctness by map address
range information (map->start and map->end) instead of using _etext
address.
This can cause an error if the target inlined function is embedded in
both __init function and normal function.
For exaample, request_resource() is a normal function but also embedded
in __init reserve_setup(). In this case, the probe point in
reserve_setup() must be skipped.
However, without this fix, it failes to setup all probe points:
# ./perf probe -v request_resource
probe-definition(0): request_resource
symbol:request_resource file:(null) line:0 offset:0 return:0 lazy:(null)

probe:request_resource (on request_resource)
You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:

commit 80526491c2 upstream.
Fix to check kprobe blacklist address correctly with relocated address
by adjusting debuginfo address.
Since the address in the debuginfo is same as objdump, it is different
from relocated kernel address with KASLR. Thus, 'perf probe' always
misses to catch the blacklisted addresses.
Without this patch, 'perf probe' can not detect the blacklist addresses
on a KASLR enabled kernel.
# perf probe kprobe_dispatcher
Failed to write event: Invalid argument
Error: Failed to add events.
#
With this patch, it correctly shows the error message.
# perf probe kprobe_dispatcher
kprobe_dispatcher is blacklisted function, skip it.
Probe point 'kprobe_dispatcher' not found.

[ Upstream commit c6aab66a72 ]
Since the commit 6a13a0d7b4 ("ftrace/kprobe: Show the maxactive number
on kprobe_events") introduced to show the instance number of kretprobe
events, the length of the 1st format of the kprobe event will not 1, but
it can be longer. This caused a parser error in perf-probe.
Skip the length check the 1st format of the kprobe event to accept this
instance number.
Without this fix:
# perf probe -a vfs_read%return
Added new event:
probe:vfs_read__return (on vfs_read%return)
You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:
perf record -e probe:vfs_read__return -aR sleep 1
# perf probe -l
Semantic error :Failed to parse event name: r16:probe/vfs_read__return
Error: Failed to show event list.
And with this fixes:
# perf probe -a vfs_read%return
...
# perf probe -l
probe:vfs_read__return (on vfs_read%return)
